This approach, known as a high current effective grounding system, eliminates overvoltage issues at the neutral point. However, practical operations often necessitate an ungrounded neutral point method for certain transformers. This is crucial to limit single-phase short circuit current, avoid communication disruptions, and properly configure relay devices. Typically, only 30% to 50% of transformer neutral points are directly grounded to ensure the system's safety and stability. Additionally, in complex ring or radial power networks, dispatchers strategically control the power flow by operating some transformer neutral points in a non-direct grounding mode as needed. In normal, symmetrical three-phase operations, the neutral point maintains a potential of zero, obviating the need for overvoltage protection. Nonetheless, various disturbances such as lightning strikes, operational mishaps, and single-phase grounding faults can cause high overvoltage conditions at the transformer's neutral point, necessitating protective measures to prevent damage.

According to the electric power industry standard DLT620-1997 on Overvoltage Protection and Insulation Coordination for AC Electrical Installations, it is advised to avoid ungrounded systems in 110KV and 220KV effectively grounded systems to prevent excessive power frequency over-voltage.
